Positions In Soccer

Football, or commonly known as soccer in the United States is one of the most celebrated and watched sports across the world. Everyone will no doubt have their favorite type of player and you will usually find more than one aspect of the game that is exciting. A successful soccer player should have some form of skill in terms of positioning, handling of the ball, set pieces, passing and shooting.

Just like other form of team games, different positions within the game will requires a different set of skills, and this article will talk about what are the responsibilities of the positions in the game and what sort of skills do they need to play in there.

The Defenders

One of the most important thing about being a defender is to have the ability to defense, that means you need to be somewhat tough and stable, and this is especially true if they are playing against a strong opponent. The main responsibility of a defender is to make sure that they do not concede a goal, as such a good defender can win the ball without needing to concede a foul to the opposing team, and this requires the defender to have the ability to tackle the ball cleanly.

You will certainly not lose a football game when you have good defense, and as a bonus some of the best defenders are even scorers! Utilizing their strength and height, they can score from set pieces such as corners or free kick by heading the ball.

Midfielders

Generally, you can find two different type of midfielder, one that is attacking minded and one that is defensive minded. An attacking minded mid fielder will the play maker of a team, creating opportunities for the strikers to score, and sometimes scoring themselves when the opportunity arise. Their primary skill is the ability to pass the ball, as well as having the vision to create openings for the team’s striker.

Defensive minded midfielders on the other hand are very much like a defender, with the exception that they play in the middle of the park. Their main job is to provide cover for their defense line, and therefore their primary skill is to intercept and win the ball from the other team’s midfielders before they have the opportunity to reach your own defense line. A good defensive midfielder can also pass the ball with accuracy and have the ability to create the opening much like an offensive one.

Forwards

A striker main job is to score goals; as such you will usually find that strikers and forwards are better known than any other players playing in different position. The most important set of skill they have is the ability to score; they are usually agile and fast, as well as physically strong to make sure that they do not lose the ball. Some of the biggest name in football plays in this position, and when they play you will no doubt be mesmerized by them as people usually enjoy a game with goals than one with superb defense.
