The Top 10 Biggest Football Stadiums In The World

Most people probably think that stadiums have gotten a lot bigger over the last few decades, as the likes of football continue to increase in popularity. The reality is that this is not the case as health and safety means that most grounds need to be reduced in capacity in order to keep fans safe.

#9

Coming in at number nine are two stadiums; Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo and Wembley. They are both popular in their own right, although Wembley is possibly better known across a lot of Football Forums. Both stadiums are said to seat 90,000 people and Wembley is said to have cost 800m to build.

#8

Beijing National Stadium has become a lot better known since it will be hosting the Italian Super Cup and the Supercoppa Italiana.. In reality, the stadium will not be open for much longer, as the owners has confirmed it will be changed into a shopping centre in the near future. This ground holds 91,000 fans – adequate is probably an underestimation.

#7

The Estadio do Maracana in Brazil was originally built for the 1950 World Cup. It has the record for the most fans ever with over 200,000 watching the game. Since then it has been reduced to a 96,000 capacity.

#6

Barcelona has always been an impressive team and their stadium is just as impressive. It has a capacity of 98,772 currently, after being reduced from 105,000. It was originally built back in 1957

#5

Fifth position is a joint effort between the Bukit Jalil National Stadium and the Azadi Stadium. Bukit Jalil hosted the Commonwealth Games back in 1998, so was popular after this. The Azadi on the other hand, is the home ground of the Iranian National Football Team.

#4

The Melbourne Cricket Ground was originally built in the 1800′s, but has undergone plenty of renovation over the years. It has hosted a range of big events and seats over 100,000 fans. This is probably not as talked about on Football Forums as the likes of Wembley.

#3

Estadio Azteca in Mexico City holds just over 100,000 fans (105,000) and is the only stadium to date that has hosted two World Cup Finals, these came in 1970 and 1986. It is also the home to the Mexican National Team.

#2

The gap between 2nd and 3rd is actually quite big. The Salt Lake Stadium sits in 2nd and it holds 15,000 more than The Estadio Azteca, making its capacity to 120,000. Its size means it hosts a lot of international events.

#1

North Korea always likes to do things big, and that is no exception here, with the Rungrado May Day Stadium which holds a staggering 150,000 people. It is a hot subject in Football forums due to its size.

Sheffield FC – The Oldest Club Around

Yorkshire, England is not necessarily known for its great football teams, but there is one club that most fans know about; Sheffield F.C (Sheffield Football Club). This is mainly due to the fact that the club is the oldest club in the world that is still playing association football. Take a look at the records and you will see that is was originally formed in 1857. This is part of the reason why so many people still talk about the club on Football Forums.

The club is currently competing in the Northern Premier League Division. The team have chopped and changed grounds over the years, with the likes of Bramall Lane being their ground at one point. Now, they are based at the Coach and Horses Ground in Dronfield, Derbyshire.

It has been a long time since there has been a Sheffield Derby. The first recorded event took place back in 1860, when Sheffield took on Hallam for the first time. Events like these are still talking about on a range of Football Forums on a worldwide basis, mainly because they are known for being the oldest club still in play today

Unfortunately for Sheffield, there are a lot of clubs that get a lot more coverage than they do. These include the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool. That being said, they have had some success. This includes 1904, when they finally got the FA Amateur Cup and of course 1977, when they managed to come second in the FA Vase. Whilst their success has been limited, they are still a focal point on many Football Forums.

Whilst it has been said Sheffield F.C. started in 1857, they actually were developed from as early as 1855. The local Cricket club used to organise friendly matches and kick about games, which sparked an interest for a much more serious club. This was something that two people were willing to start.

It was then that both Nathaniel Creswick and William Prest decided there was a need for a Football Club in the area. From here on outwards, the pair put all their effort into the club, eventually getting things done by 1857 at an inaugural meeting. To this day, the club is known to be the oldest club that is still in competition, which is possibly why Football Forums focus on the team so much and they are still talked about to this day!!
